I was excited to be given the new OPPO Find X2 Pro by my wife to play with and review for this article! After delving into its outstanding features for a few hours I knew I needed this phone, and I needed it bad! Suddenly my contentment with my Samsung Galaxy S10 (which is a great phone by the way!) went out the window, and the new benchmark had been set. I am a technically minded person and I deal with a lot of high tech equipment and some pretty nice phones for my job, so I know when I am beholding something of great glory.
Now I have to give you a bit of background on the tech situation with my wife Angela and I. I am unashamedly an Android enthusiast and Angela is a staunch Apple supporter – so you can imagine the number of light-hearted arguments we have about which platform is the best. Occasionally she thinks that she wins one of these arguments but it’s really just my trying not to hurt her feelings. One of the main arguments she presents is “but Apple devices are all so pretty”, which is when you know she’s really scraping the bottom of the barrel since the likes of the OPPO Find X2 Pro is very pleasing to the eye and equally aesthetically pleasing to use! Like it or not, the new OPPO is at the top of the leaderboard and it’s there to stay!
So what’s the big deal I hear you say? Well, for me the feature that stands out the most is the brilliant array of high tech optics mounted on the back of this phone! It’s clearly obvious from just looking at the cameras that they mean business as the hybrid zoom lens looks like OPPO have somehow managed to squeeze a telescope in there! And a telescope they have! I set myself a vista to zoom in on – a distant boat on the harbour, I pressed the zoom button and was amazed to see it zoom all the way in to a crisp 10x zoom – which matched the max zoom on my S10 and I was wowed by the clarity! But then pressed the zoom button again and it wound up to a beautiful crisp 20x Zoom – my goodness this ‘telescope’ was impressive! I thought, incorrectly, that 20x was all I’d get. I was wrong. Very wrong. The hybrid zoom kept on winding out – 30 … 40 … 50 … 60!! What the heck?! At 60x zoom I was looking at specific details on the distant yacht and, had there been a person on it, I probably would have been able to see their facial expression! At this magnification the motion stabiliser is really useful to give you a steady picture. Conversely, the macro lens is also great for capturing expansive vistas. Gone are the days of needing to lug around a separate camera for those day to day shots!
The next thing, oddly, that impressed me was all of the little UI (user interface) effects that OPPO has integrated into Android. For example when you plug in the charge cable, you get a great animated display which is too hard for me to describe so you’ll have to take my word for it. Speaking of charging, I was amazed to see that the phone charges from 0 – 100% in around 40 minutes – which for a 4,260mAh battery is incredibly fast! A battery of this size gives you all day use – which most other phones fall woefully short of. Gone are the days of having to lug around a power bank and extra cables!
I know Angela will comment on the “pretty” aspects of the phone, so the last thing I would like to comment on is the overall package. Sure there are individual features that are outstanding but in this case I really feel that OPPO have put their best foot forward and upped the ante against Samsung and Apple with a great all-rounder! The QHD+ screen is vibrant and silky smooth, the case feels solid and pleasingly tactile, the buttons are situated in sensible positions so as not to get in the way, the 8-core processor and 12Gb memory is so fast that you virtually wait for nothing. The only thing I would say detracts from this phone is the fact that there is no traditional headphone port – for this you will need an adaptor or Bluetooth headphones. I should also mention the cost. At approx $1,800, this is a serious investment and not one you will make lightly. All in all though, I love this phone and I don’t want to sing its praises too much or my wife may be tempted to switch sides and spoil my chances of owning this beautiful piece of tech!

Well, I’m happy to say that I do agree with Royce - the big feature on the OPPO was for me - as a mama who…after seeing so many photos of my newborn child around the house had the suggestion made to me that I should make ‘Ella wallpaper’ – which in the glow of being a first time mum – I thought was a fabulous idea….the big feature is the camera! I can take wide angle lense photos, portrait photos, close up photos (insert scene from Forrest Gump where Bubba talks all about the types of shrimp dishes you can make - 😃 he he – you get the ‘picture’ 😃). You can also adjust your photos once taken to give yourself a little ‘editing’…I may or may not have given myself whiter teeth (okay and maybe a softer overall look) in a recent social media selfie with my child post 😃 , yeah yeah embrace my natural beauty etc etc – sometimes it’s just a bit of fun! 😃
What I love about the camera is that it adjusts the lighting itself in the space you’re in. I tend to find I’d take photos for our OHbaby! insta page or for the mag and website, but will always have to edit the lighting. It’s not too much of a problem and I’ve become okay at it, but it’s so much easier having it already adjusted and to just take the picture! Especially when you’re trying to get one of your little one who either doesn’t site still and you’re going through lots of shots, or you’re getting so many of a sequence that are all just too gorgeous and now you don’t have to light adjust them all! YES please!
We loved the wide angle lense so much that we even used the camera for our interiors photoshoot in our Spring issue of OHbaby! (out 21 Sept 2020). Even better is that it’s high resolution enough to print professionally with the magazine. Magazine and print images need to be 300dpi (dots per inch) cameras with lower resolution tend to output around 72-150. So this is great!
It’s also good for using to take photos of your baby/children to put on your personalised cover of OHbaby! each quarter. That is one very exciting innovation from OHbaby! (slight plug yes – but it’s because you’ll get an awesome picture on the cover of your baby – just saying).
The usability is great – and once I got my head out of the ‘apple zone’ of functionality – I could understand the logic and the phone worked great. No issues with app installs and the new Covid app tracer works fine on it too (sigh for Covid – boo!).
Overall, love the phone – love the detail and clarity of the photos it takes, logical usability and it even comes with it’s own cover!
Great aesthetics too!
