Au Naturel
Beauty products that will have a big impact on your skin, but little on the earth.
The natural beauty market is big business these days, but the sad reality is that in an unregulated environment, a brand can boast the word “natural” on its label while containing as little as 1% of natural ingredients. So beware the “green-washing” that can go on, learn to read labels and seek out those brands that truly can live up to their claims.
Not only has NZ’s Karen Murrell created a lipstick that ’s á la naturale, but its box is made of recycled card , and the lipstick canister is made of a corn resin-based material that will start to biodegrade within 100 days once you put it in the compost. You deserve a kiss for that, Karen!

BioGro is the leading certifier of organic products in New Zealand. To meet the organic standard a product must have a minimum of 95% organic ingredients, with the remainder from an approved list. They must be GM-free, not tested on animals, and contain no parabens, phenoxyethanol, synthetic fragrances or other nasties such as sodium lauryl sulphate.
NATRUE is the pre-eminent European standard for certifying natural but non-organic ingredients. BioGro is the first NZ certifier to be able to grant the NATRUE standard and its first endorsement went to Trilogy. So look out for these logos — they’ll be coming soon to a beauty aisle near you!
