DIY: kid's beaded shelf
This DIY kid’s beaded shelf will be the perfect place to store their treasures.
You will need:
☙ Resene testpots
☙ Paint brush
☙ Drill
☙ 1 piece of pine 80cm in length, 13.5cm wide and 1cm thick
☙ 1 piece of dowel 80cm in length and 2.5cm in diameter
☙ Wooden beads (ours were from Spotlight)
☙ Thin cotton rope (ours was from The $2 shop)
Step 1: Cut your wood to your desired length, ours is 80cm in length.
Step 2: Paint both sides of your shelf, dowel, hanging hook and beads. You will need at least two coats of Resene paint.
Step 3: Drill a hole in the dowel 2cm in from the end and repeat on other end. Make sure the hole you drill is big enough for your rope to go through. Also drill a hole in each corner of the shelf. We drilled 2cm in from the sides and 2cm in from the end.
Step 4: Cut your rope pieces to 165cm for the front and 130cm for the back piece. TIP: for ease in threading, put a small piece of tape around each end of the rope.
Step 5: Thread the longest piece of rope down through the dowel on one side and tie a knot to secure underneath of the dowel.
Step 6: Thread the wooden beads on the top side of the dowel (we used six).
Step 7: On top of the beads, thread the rope through the front hole of the shelf wood.
Step 8: Thread another four beads onto the string so you have beads under and above the shelf.
Step 9: Still using the same piece of rope, thread another four beads and then thread the rope through again, then six beads and finally the dowel. Repeat entire process on other side.
Step 10: Ensure you are happy with the hanging position and then tie a knot and trim excess rope. Thread the shorter length of rope through the rear hole of the shelf and tie a knot.
Step 11: Thread through the other rear hole and ensure the shelf hangs correctly and tie a knot.
Step 12: Hang on wall and add decorative pieces and clothes. Enjoy!
