Sister space: a sweet room designed for two

Sharing is easy when your mum has a knack for creating beautiful spaces packed with personality. Artist Bek Halliday shows us inside her daughters' room.
Bek Halliday is an abstract artist and illustrator living on the Central Coast in Australia. Mama to Avie and Willow, Bek took a hold of her life-long dream and started her own business three years ago to help support her growing family. With a background in interior design and fine art, Bek now juggles motherhood with her home-based business - creating unique, modern and affordable artworks for adults and children. Bek is a firm believer that everyone should be able to enjoy art. “I like to think that I am creating something ‘happy’ for your home” says Bek. Her passion and talent are reflected in the sweet room she has designed and styled for her two daughters to share.
How did you go about setting up a shared bedroom with individual space for each of your daughters?
Bek: As the girls were moving into a decent-sized room, I wanted to provide their own little zones but still create harmony within the space. I also had a lot of elements that I wanted to include so I had to think outside the box if they were all going to fit!
What are your best tips for creating a shared space for siblings?
Bek: I find it easier to visualise the end result by starting with rough sketches to make sure I like the look of different layouts. Keeping the colour palette and theme cohesive, so the room flows from zone to zone, is also helpful in a shared room.
What is your favourite aspect of the room?
Bek: I love so many things! I think the panelled wall and half-painted walls really establish the space. You can be more adventurous with kids' rooms. Feature walls are so much fun and look great.
Biggest splurge and best bargain?
Bek: The bed drape by Numero74 and the hanging chair from Byron Bay Hanging Chairs were worth the splurge. My best bargains were the gorgeous wrought iron bed frames - I found them on Gumtree!
