Recently I was given the opportunity to trial the revolutionary Russell Hobbs R-VAC in my home. Naturally, I jumped at the chance to let someone, or should I say something, else complete the arduous task that is the weekly hoovering. Also perfect timing as we had just moved into a new unit that was in desperate need of a good clean!

The day it arrived, in a handy carry box that could easily be transported home, was very exciting - off I went to get started. Pulling it out of the box my partner gave me a sideways glance… “What the heck is that?” After I explained, his response was “Do you leave it alone in the house? – I’m not sure how I feel about that” as if the R-VAC was going to start snooping through our drawers?! Anyway, after 12 hours on the charge and me making my way through the excellently clear (dare I say female-friendly) instructions to set her up, R-VAC was ready to be let loose. Off she goes and we just watch, for about 20 minutes, as she makes her way around the room, back and forth and spinning in circles. Quite mesmerising….

Eventually we head out the door, wondering if the movement would set off the alarm and having a final giggle as we leave her whizzing around. Upon our return we find the R-VAC had made it’s way under the bookcase and got itself lodged there (not ideal), and it also happened again under the fridge so we had to set up a few barriers to prevent it getting stuck. Admittedly we do have a rather small apartment unit and perhaps the R-VAC is best suited in larger spaces but for the most part the floor looks pretty good and the best bit is that I didn’t have to do anything but push a button! A bit of clean up is required at the end - just 5-10 minutes to empty the bin, brush out the dust (brush provided) and use your hairdryer to clean the filter and then you’re done.

There are some pretty clever tricks with it as well. You can confine it to a room with a little sensor system AND (the best thing) a timer where it just picks itself off the charging station and sets off on it’s merry way at whatever time of the day you have set it up to do so. Sensors on the machine also mean it doesn’t bash into anything or mark your walls/skirting, it is great for getting into those hard to reach places especially under the bed and couch but you will need to be wary of the spaces that it can slip under and potentially not get out of!

Technology wise, this is an awesome product and if you are strapped for time and energy to push around a vacuum cleaner, or if you want something to act as a supplementary cleaner between “cleaning days”, then I would definitely recommend this for you. However, if you have a small apartment or you are perhaps like me, a little pedantic when it comes to a clean floor (I just love hearing those dust particles making their way up the hose) then I would probably stick with the classic hand-held vacuum cleaner.
