Be inspired by the woman behind Gwamma.x

Tracy Newell is the woman behind Gwamma.x. We ask her some questions about her business and the family life juggle.
Tell us a bit about your business:
What began as a necessity has grown into something that I'm passionate about. As a young mother and having had five premature babies, I was introduced to a very soft cloth used specifically in the neonatal unit for the delicate, fragile skin of the newborns. I hadn't seen anything similar on the market so I began to make these as gifts for family and friends, and continued to do so for many years. When our five grandchildren arrived, I could see the increased need for a thicker, softer muslin cloth. So two years ago, out came the sewing machine again – this time with the intention of making them accessible to people throughout the country. Today my range includes eco wipes, flannels and swaddles.
What’s your biggest inspiration?
My children! Being premature, they were all fighters from day one and they inspire me every day. They encourage me to try new things and to not give up. With children of their own, being able to critique my products is another bonus!
How do you find a balance between family life and your business?
With a new and growing business it’s very easy to become fixated on what I’m doing. I’ve gone some days from dawn to dusk in my workshop, only noticing the time when my husband arrives home late in the evening. I try to be present after I finish work and also prioritise time with family; I love spending quality time with my grandchildren.
What’s on the horizon for your business?
I’ll definitely be continuing to sew and produce beautiful 100% cotton muslin products. I’m constantly thinking up and designing new creations. My hope is that one day, Gwamma Muslin products will be used by mums both here and around the world.
