Heading away these school holidays?
Kiwi attitudes towards travelling were uncovered by our pals at Booking.com, in its recent first-of-its-kind Asia-Pacific intergenerational travel research and the insights are fascinating…
More than half of those surveyed (57%), would consider an intergenerational family trip with extended family. They highlighted the joy of bonding and creating lasting memories with loved ones as key benefits they value. Nearly a third (28%) also believe that passing down family stories, traditions and values is a key benefit to travelling with multiple generations. (We personally think the extra sets of hands to help with the kids would be especially beneficial!).
On the flip side, over a third (32%) are nervous about conflicting interests on holiday with family. Other barriers holding Kiwis back from intergenerational travel included it being more complex to satisfy everyone, and a lack of privacy.
These October school holidays, local destinations Auckland and Christchurch are the top two places people plan to visit, and Gisborne is a trending location too with a +85% increase in search year on year.
Internationally, Japan and Bali continue to be the most searched for destinations for school holidays, with Tokyo up 120% on the previous year.
Hotels remain the go-to for the majority of Kiwi families, with resorts following as the next preferred option. A growing trend is emerging towards unique stays though, around 7% of families are drawn to culturally immersive stays, adding a touch of local flavour and adventure to their trips.
