Summer tips for promoting body positivity around kids
Summer means more pool days, beach trips, and summer outfits. But along with the sunshine, those sneaky negative thoughts about our bodies can creep in. The good news? You have the power to be a cycle breaker and shape a positive body image for your kids. Here are some ideas to get you started…
- Focus on what your body does rather than how it looks
Instead of saying, "I don’t like how my arms look," try saying, "I love how strong my arms feel when we swim together." Highlighting what your body can do fosters appreciation and self-respect. - Celebrate all bodies, including your own
When you see people of different shapes and sizes at the beach or pool, make positive comments like, "Isn’t it wonderful how every body is unique?" This normalises diversity. Remember, if you embrace your own body with love, your kids are likely to follow suit. - Ban negative self-talk
Your children hear more than you think! If you catch yourself being critical of your appearance, reframe it as quickly as possible (for your sake and theirs): "I’m grateful for my body because it lets me play with you." - Wear what makes you feel great
Forget "flattering" or "hiding." Choose swimwear and clothes that make you feel confident and happy. When your kids see you owning your style, they’ll learn to do the same. - Encourage fun over perfection
Whether it's building sandcastles or splashing in the waves, focus on joy and experiences rather than appearance. Show your kids that summer is about having fun, not looking "put together".
