10 easy ways to practise self-care because you deserve it!
Motherhood is relentless and more often than not, you’re running on empty. Here are ten easy ways to practise a little self-care (that don’t include meditation!)
You might feel like there’s not enough time or money, or that self-care is too indulgent, but there are a number of nourishing practices that are free and easy, and will make you feel better as you go about your day. In these times we're living in, being a little kinder to ourselves is more important than ever. A less-stressed mama is good for the whole family.
- Sit outside
Stepping away from things with a cup of tea or coffee for five minutes and just enjoying a moment of fresh air can be calming. Ideally by yourself, but if you have little ones at home, this can also be a chance for them to get outdoors.
- Do nothing and be okay with that
If you are waiting for an appointment or for the kids to come to the car, just sit and take some slow, deep breaths. You don’t have to fill that time with something 'productive'.
- Soak your feet
A little foot soak while you work from home, do a chore or watch TV is a nice way to relax. Add some nice oils or salts, and moisturise afterwards for a little extra luxury.
- Make housework fun
If you have to do a chore, make it fun by listening to an audio book or music while you do it.
- Call a friend rather than messaging
Messages are fine if you are arranging something or checking in with someone, but it’s even nicer to hear your friend’s voice and find out how they really are, talk about your lives and mark important milestones such as birthdays.
- Take a relaxing bath
Pick a good time, light some candles, lock the bathroom door and soak.
- Sleep in or have a nap
You’ll probably still wake up at the usual time (or be woken up!) but if it's an option, let your partner get up with the kids while you rest. Or take an afternoon nap if your day allows.
- Take the easy route
If the task (eg cleaning or food preparation) is something that you enjoy – great! But if you are exhausted or simply can’t be bothered, take a shortcut or say yes to help. Honestly, no one will care, and it will make a world of difference to your mood.
- Read a chapter of a book
Or more if time allows. The news and social media are often depressing reads, so pick up a good book instead.
- Finally, just say no
Easier said than done sometimes, but learn to say no to things you don’t need to do or don't have the capacity for.
