Summer pregnancy tips
Pregnancy in summer can be a beautiful thing. Think long flowy dresses, long maternity leave days filled with ocean dips and refreshing cool drinks with your feet up. Sounds good right? The reality sadly, can be a little different. When the third trimester coincides with a scorching Kiwi summer season, there are a few extra considerations to keep in mind. Here are some tried and tested tips for staying cool and comfortable during your summer pregnancy.
Keep hydrated
The summer heat can make you more prone to dehydration. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay well-hydrated.
Protection from the sun
Protect your skin with a broad-spectrum sunscreen and lightweight, breathable clothing. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are great ideas also.
Find the shade
When outdoors, find shady spots to rest and cool off. Heat can be especially challenging for pregnant women as your body temp is naturally higher.
Swelling prevention:
Swollen feet and ankles are common during pregnancy and a real pain. Elevate your legs when possible and wear comfortable, supportive shoes when out and about.
Swim time
Taking a dip in the pool or ocean can be incredibly refreshing. Swimming is a low-impact exercise that can help alleviate discomfort from all your aches and pains.
Cool off
Keep a small handheld fan or a cooling mist spray in your bag or car for instant relief when you're overheating.
Clothing matters
Choose loose-fitting, breathable clothes made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen. Light colours can help reflect the sun's rays so avoid dark hues or black
Gentle movement
Prenatal yoga or gentle stretches can really assist with relaxation and flexibility. Early mornings or evenings are best before the day heats up (or indoors with air con!).
