What can we be taking as a family and give to our little ones to prevent winter bugs?
“In our Kiwiherb range we have echinacea which is offered through our Children’s Echinature – a wonderful one to help with prevention from a medicinal point of view, another good one is De-Stuff” says Sharlene. Another thing she suggests is layering up, and dressing appropriately for the weather. Hydration is also key (this is particularly important for breastfeeding mums).
Tip: Simmer frozen berries to make them into a syrup, add a touch of natural sweetener such as honey, and add the herbs to that and keep it in the fridge to help make them more enjoyable for kids.
Which Kiwiherb products would you recommend for prevention of colds and flus?
Sharlene says you can take a daily low dosage of De-Stuff and Echinature. “Another one is a new product we’ve just released, called Children’s Immune Drops which has a lot of research backing its effectiveness” says Sharlene.
How can we protect our kids from bugs and germs at daycare/kindy etc?
Sharlene shares that there’s research that shows that kids that play outside in the soil have healthier gut microbiome so getting outdoors as much as possible is helpful. She also suggests making sure your kids get enough rest, good nutrition, low emotional stress etc.
What might it look like when your little one is coming down with something? What are the symptoms?
“Sometimes we see a wane in energy or a change in their behaviour, where they can be more subdued. First signs are also often getting mucousy, pulling on ears if they’re sore, fever, and tiredness” says Sharlene.
When should you be concerned when your child is unwell?
“If your child is not responding to natural remedies and is going downhill (ie high fevers, difficulty with airways), call Healthline NZ or take them to your doctor” Sharlene says.
How does the Children’s Goodnight Chest Syrup help?
Sharlene says that this product was created to help soothe coughs like the day time one does, but has the addition of passionflower and wild cherry which helps stop that repetitive hacking and coughing which can often be worse at night. The passionflower also helps with sleep.
Best winter wellness tip:
“Act in a preventative way. Take care of yourself. Being and staying well doesn’t just happen by doing one thing, it’s the things we do everyday that have the biggest impact” says Sharlene.
