10 summer sleep essentials
With the longer daylight hours and warmer evenings, getting your little ones to sleep can be a bit of a challenge, we’ve been there! Here's how to ensure your child gets the restful sleep they need for summer adventuring.
- Routine rules:
Maintain your usual bedtime routine, even when away from home. A familiar, soothing routine can help signal to your child that it's time to wind down.
- Comfortable sleep environment:
Whether you’re at home or on holiday, making sure your child's sleep space is as cool, dark, and quiet as possible is going to be beneficial. Use travel blackout curtains or blinds to block out the summer light and consider a portable white noise machine also.
- Consistent schedule:
Children thrive on routine, so try to stick to a regular nap schedule as much as possible. As boring as it might sound, it’s actually the key to having more fun and freedom as your wee one will be happy and well rested with less meltdowns (win-win).
- Summer sleepwear:
Lightweight, breathable sleepwear for your child is crucial in summer. 100% Cotton is a great choice.
- Hydration:
It's important to keep your child well-hydrated in hot weather. Offer water (if over six months) or breastfeeds regularly to prevent dehydration.
- Portable fans:
If you're traveling or camping, consider a portable fan for your child's sleep space to keep the air moving and cool in the first part of the night or for naps. A frozen bottle of water in front of the fan can help bring the temperature of the room down by a couple of degrees.
- Stroller or front pack naps:
Your baby may take naps in a stroller or front pack while out and about this summer, ensure they're safely strapped in and that you provide some shade and adequate airflow to keep them comfortable.
- Portable travel cot:
Investing in a portable travel cot is a really great idea for travel, camping, or even if you intend of staying the night at friends or family’s houses over the summer. These lightweight options are easy to set up and provide a familiar sleep space.
- Mosquitoes :
Use child-safe mosquito repellent and consider mosquito nets for sleep areas if you're in an area that may have a lot of bugs.
- Baby monitor:
A good-quality baby monitor can provide peace of mind while your child sleeps, especially when you're away from home and in a different environment.
